Used to denote the occurrence of a particular event, that is, to place a certain value in time. Flags contain values of either 0s or 1s only and are used either in simple multiplication or often as the basis of an IF statement conditional. If a timing component contains values other than 0s and 1s it should be referred to as a partial period factor.
In other standards, flags may be referred to as ‘masks’, drawn from the idea of a silk-screening process that allows ink through (when equal to 1) or not (when equal to 0).
